final exam notes

4 complex types:

  • empty (must have attributes to be complex)
  • elements only
  • text only (with attribute)
  • mixed

know what the different technologies look like:
  • xml
  • css
  • dtd's
  • xhtml
  • xslt
  • schemas
  • dom/sax
  • web services

When would you use the xml DOM vs SAX. Know their similarities and differences.

DOM:
  • Tree-based
  • Nice for smaller XML files, but because of the whole XML file
    representation is in memory, it is possible not useful for
    very large documents
  • Memory intensive
SAX:
  • Event-Based
  • Less memory intensive
  • An XML tree is not viewed as a data structure, but as a stream of events generated by the parser

Know xpath basics + advantages of using xpath

Paths:
Absolute--> /step/step/...
Relative--> step/step/...

Wildcards
* Matches any element nodes
node() matches all nodes (elements, text, attributes, pi, namespace, comment)
@*match all attribute nodes

Location Path Expressions
| a lists of child elements
// a node and it's child elements
/ a nodes child elements

Name at least 3 escape/danger characters in a dtd.

©
< > &

Know the web service related acronyms, and what they do.

SOAP:
simple object acess protocol
A communication protocol which allows programs to communicate via http.

UDDI:
universal description and discovery integration
An online directory that lists and provides info on web services.

WSDL: web services definition language
Describes what a web sevice can do, where it resides and how to invoke it.

Define namespace

An XML namespace is a collection of names, identified by a URI reference, which are used in XML documents as element types and attribute names.

Know the xhtml doc types

xhtml 1.0 : strict, transitional, framset
xhtml 1.1

What file extention do scalable vector graphics get?

.svg

What are the xpath long and short forms?

AbbreviationMeaning
None child::
@attribute::
. self::
.. parent
///descendant-of-self/

What makes an xml document well formed?
  • Has an XML declaration
  • only one root element
  • every start tag must have an end tag (all tags are closed)
  • all attributes are quoted
  • tags must be properly nested
  • No minimizing attributes

Whats the difference between well formed and valid?

If a document is well formed, it follows the xhtml well formedness rules. In order to be valid it has to follow the rules of a dtd or schema that is associated with it.

Why does xsl work well with databases?

The datatypes are mapable

Why would you generate xml from a database?

If you ever needed to move information from a data base on to the internet. For example, if you were using the internet and wanted to look up a book in an online bookstore you could get the info from the data base to show up in your browser.

How would you generate xml from a database?

Use xslt to convert the the data into xml.

How would you constrain the # of passengers in a car with a schema?

Set the value between maxOccurs and minOccurs (?)

How is xslt different from css?

Xslt has added functionality. XSLT can, but CSS cannot:
  • Change the order of elements in a document
  • Make computations based on the content of the document
  • Add content to the document
  • Combine multiple documents into one

Whats one major UDDI provider?

Microsoft

What does UDDI stand for? What does it do?

Universal description and discovery integration. It provides a directory that lists and describes web services.

How many templates are found in an xslt document?

Minimum of one.
